Strabismus that just won't quit

Ugh... Amelia's eye issues will continue for a while.

After now three eye muscle surgeries, we got word yesterday that she still has a fairly significant eye turn. We are not able to step off this path yet. One year has passed since surgery #1, and we are tired and discouraged.

The most recent surgery helped her a lot, and we are happy with the improvement. She is not suffering headaches or clumsiness that the doctors would expect at such a level of crossing, and we are very thankful for that. Her happiness and current level of comfort allow us to take things slow. We are going to wait this out for a while, under close watch from her pediatric ophthalmologist. That, too, is good news. We need a break. We need some time to live life without scrutinizing her eyes. We need time to simply have fun without a surgery date on the calendar.

We will also take this time to hold out for a miracle. Maybe her brain will recognize her eye position one day. Maybe her eyes will improve on their own over the next six, seven, eight months. Maybe, just maybe, we will be able to walk away from this frustration without causing this precious child any more stress.

For more information on children's eye health, please visit the American Academy for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus - and bring your children for eye exams early. Another fantastic resource is the Little Four Eyes website and Little Four Eyes Facebook group. The mamas I have met there are truly amazing and supportive people.
